Editorial guidelines

In deciding whether to accept a manuscript for publication, the Editorial Board reserves the right to make any changes deemed necessary to ensure that the text conforms to the journal’s editorial standards. The journal uses a peer-review system, with manuscripts submitted to anonymous reviewers.

Manuscripts must not exceed 40,000 characters, including spaces. This limit includes the title, abstracts in Italian and English (up to 1,500 characters including spaces), main text, notes and bibliography. Authors may submit up to 8 images in .jpg or .png format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

The main editorial guidelines are summarised below.

Abstract and keywords

Authors must provide an abstract in Italian and English (maximum 1,500 characters) and five keywords in both Italian and English.

Text format

Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word or a compatible format, using Times New Roman, 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing and justified alignment.

Bibliography

The bibliography must be placed at the end of the article and submitted without additional formatting.

Structure

Section headings must be numbered. Illustrations must not be embedded in the main text file.

Bibliographic references

References must be included in the text according to the following system:

(Author’s surname year: 00, fig. 00)

For example:
(Furumark 1941: 45, fig. 12; Lo Schiavo, Sanges 1994: 67–69).

Style and punctuation

• Foreign and Latin expressions must be italicised.
• Quotations must be enclosed in angle quotation marks « »; single quotation marks ‘ ’ should be used for non-standard or particular uses of words; double quotation marks “ ” should be used for definitions.
• Units of measurement must be written without a full stop (e.g. m, km).
• En dashes (–) should be used for lists and punctuation; hyphens (-) for other purposes.

Notes

Notes must be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the text. They should be formatted in Times New Roman, 10 pt, with single line spacing.

Formatting

• Do not use colours, paragraph indentation, spacing between paragraphs or bold type (except in headings).
• Capital letters should be used only for proper names, “US” [stratigraphic units] and abbreviated cardinal directions. Small capitals should be used for bibliographic abbreviations and authors’ names in notes and the bibliography.
• Ibid., ead., supra, infra and et al. must be italicised.

Figures and tables

• Figures must be submitted in .jpg or .png format at 300 dpi; tables may be submitted as Word files or as images.
• References to figures and tables in the text must be in bold: (fig. 3), (tab. 5).
• Files must be numbered sequentially. Figure and table captions must be provided in a separate Word file.
